Measuring Recommendations

When measuring for your barn door, you will first need to decide if you’d like to have the trim around the door opening visible when the barn door is closed, or if you’d like the barn door to be flush with the edges of the trim, therefore hiding the trim completely behind the closed door. Should you have any questions regarding how to measure, please let us know and we will be happy to assist you.

How to Measure with Trim Visible

If you’d like for the trim to be visible when your door is closed, we recommend a minimum of a 2” overlap of the door on top of the opening; this applies to the left side of the door, the right side of the door, and the top of the door. This means that you would take the width measurement of the opening, and then add 4” (minimum). You would then take the height measurement of the opening, and add 2” (minimum). You would then subtract 1/2” off of the height measurement so that the door will sit up off of the floor and slide easily on its track.

How to Measure with Trim Covered

If you’d like for the trim to be covered completely by your door when it is closed, you would measure from the outside edge of the trim on the left side, to the outside edge of the trim on the right side, to get the total width measurement. For the height measurement, you would measure from the floor to the top edge of the trim. You would then subtract 1/2” off of the height measurement so that the door will sit up off of the floor and slide easily on its track.
